In Haiti in 2015

In Port au Prince with Haiti Communiterre
in 2015

Lorin Symington has a special connection with Haiti and thinks that if Lytefire workd there, it can work everywhere! With the logistic support of a small local NGO in Port-au-Prince, Haiti Communiterre, the goal of the first project was to train a local artisan to build the technology, start a bakery business and explore opportunities.

Local bakeries are rare in Haïti because of lack of wood due to extreme deforestation. In 3 weeks Lorin trained locals to basic usage and built the solar bakery at the NGO compound. The Solar Bakery project aimed to demonstrate and establish these entrepreneurial activities in Haiti.

The bakery project was based on the Lytefire 4 model (4 square meters of mirror) and could feed 30 people during lunch time and produce 15 kg of cake during the rest of the day. This was experimental and Lytefire 5 or 6 solar ovens are more adapted.

Sadly, the NGO’s workshop has been damaged and the harsh weather and economical conditions on the island prevented us to continue as we wanted to.

Haiti Communitere’s website can be found here.

Lorin tried again to implement the solar oven in Haiti in 2020 - check here.
